Benjamin Harry Rhoads, Jr. W5TYZ

Benny Rhoads, 84, of Orange, TX, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026.

Benny was born on January 6, 1942, in Mercer, Pennsylvania, to Benjamin and Edith Rhoads. In 1954, he moved with his family to Orange, Texas, where they took ownership of the Dairy Queen on Park Avenue. He graduated from Stark High School in 1959 and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1966. During his service, he worked as a small arms instructor and was stationed in Korea from 1963 to 1964.

Following his military service, Benny worked at DuPont before opening and operating a Dairy Queen in Buna from 1974 to 1979. He later returned to DuPont’s Sabine River Works, where he dedicated over 30 years of service before retiring.

Benny was a man of many talents and interests, always eager to learn and try something new. He was a skilled beekeeper and volunteered in that role at Shangri La when it first opened. A licensed Ham radio operator since his time in the Air Force, he was active in the Orange Amateur Radio Club. His passion for model trains led to his involvement with the Orange Model Railroad Club, and his lifelong love of classic cars and Triumph motorcycles meant he almost always had a project underway.

A proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Benny held a deep appreciation for American history and heritage. He also found great joy in the outdoors – hunting, woodworking, gardening, and especially spending time at his family’s camp along the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania.

An avid reader with a sharp mind, Benny was often described as a “walking encyclopedia,” always ready to share knowledge, stories, and a good laugh. His lively spirit and playful sense of humor brought joy to those around him. He was deeply involved with the VFW holding a lifelong membership, and serving as Quartermaster, 1,2, 3-year Trustee, and on the house committee.

Above all, Benny cherished his family. Affectionately known as “Pa,” he held a special place in the hearts of his grandchildren, who treasured their time with him.

His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Edith Rhoads; wife, Jan Ricks Rhoads; son, Benjamin Harry Rhoads III; sister, Claire Smith; and sister-in-law, Susan Rhoads.

He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Lillie Rhoads; daughters, Courtney Rhoads Alcott and husband Sean, Kimberly Gauthier and husband Charles; sons, Jeff Bilbo and wife Joy, John Bilbo and wife Andrea; beloved dog and devoted companion, Chester; grandchildren, Katelyn Alcott, Luke Alcott, Ava Alcott, Justin Bilbo, Kyle Bilbo, Chelsea Bilbo, Emily Gauthier, Madeleine Gauthier, Jacob Bilbo and wife Leilah, and Bradley Bilbo and wife Bethany; great grandchild, Charlotte Bilbo; brother, Bartley William Rhoads; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to VFW Post 2775 in Orange at 5303 N 16th St, Orange, TX 77630.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Pastor Harland Strother.

Visitation will begin prior to the service at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.

Cremation will be held under
the direction of
Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
