BILL BARKLEY KC5DFV

Billy (Bill) Harold Barkley Sr. was born October 6, 1923, to William Guffie and Mavis Doggett Barkley in Hamilton, Texas. He passed away January 28, 2025, at 101 years of age with his three sons at his bedside.
He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1941 and then attended John Tarleton Agricultural College in Stephenville for two years before entering the Army Air Corp in April, 1943. He married Claudine Fergusson in June, 1943, in Wichita, Kansas at the First Methodist Church; Claudine preceded him in death on September 17, 2010.
Bill was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1946 upon his return from one year of service on the island of Guam in the South Pacific; he is believed to be Hamilton County’s last surviving World War II veteran. He entered the University of Texas – Austin that same year, and graduated in January, 1949, with a BBA Degree with a major in Personnel Management. Upon graduation, he was employed by Sears, Roebuck &Company and later for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company. In 1954 he was employed by the Midland National Bank where he became a Vice President. In 1970 he joined the Hamilton National Bank as Executive Vice President and later became President, Chairman of the Board, and Chairman of the Board Emeritus. He retired in February, 1992. He was also a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at SMU, Dallas, and of the American Institute of Banking with a major in Investments.
Bill was an active and dedicated community member wherever he lived. In Midland he served as President of the Civitan Club, Chairman of the Administrative Board at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, and spent many years as an adult leader of Troop 160 of the Boy Scouts of America. In Hamilton he was a fifty-two-year member of the First United Methodist Church, where he also sang in the choir for 35 years. In 2022 he was a charter member of Grace Methodist Church in Hamilton. He served as President of the Lion’s Club in 1973 and 1974, where he was a member for over fifty-four years. In addition, he was Chairman of District 4 of the Texas Banker’s Association, the Series E Bond Chairman for Hamilton County, a member of the Hamilton Glider Pilots Association, the Hamilton Development Association, the Director of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, the Hamilton Senior Center Foundation, a member of the Hamilton Public Library, and an active member of the Hamilton Cemetery Board until his passing. Bill became an amateur radio operator (KC5DFV) in Midland and continued signaling all of the years he lived in Hamilton. Another of his passions was flying; he earned his private pilot’s license while in Hamilton and flew for many years thereafter.
Bill is survived by his three sons, Dr. Billy Harold (Hal) Jr. and his wife, Vicki Willimon Barkley, Dr. Robert Fergusson and his wife Dr. Sara Stone Barkley, and Todd Gene Barkley; four grandchildren, Brent Edward and his wife, Jamie Downs Barkley, Daniel Landon and his wife Ashley Queen Barkley, Rachel Anne Barkley, William Gregg Barkley (deceased), and Robert David Stone; great grandchildren, Asa Fergusson Menjivar, Eilan Landon Menjivar, Rhett Emerson Barkley, Archer Landon Barkley, and Cambri Kian Stone.
His family will forever remember him for his loving and generous nature; he was, indeed, the family patriarch. Our family would like to extend a gracious thank you to all of those doctors, nurses, and support staff at both Hamilton Hospital, Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest Hospital Waco, and Focused Care at Hamilton who cared for Bill over the past six weeks. Your kindness and skill will be remembered.

Marty Overman KF4MDX
December 9, 1960 – April 1, 2025
Mr. Marty Lynn Overman, age 64, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2025 in Jackson. He was born December 9, 1960 in Lexington to the late Joe Harold and Betty Havener Overman. He was a former employee at the chain factory and attended Old Bethel Church. He loved ham radios and metal detecting. Survivors include his children, Bethany Ennis (Justin), Tiffany Hensley, Daniel Willis (Kimberly), and Wesley Overman (Kelly); his two grandchildren, Rowan Willis and Addison Ennis; and his dog that he adored, SugarBear.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 AM, Friday, April 4, 2025, in the chapel of Pafford Funeral Home in Lexington. Interment will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, 4 – 8 PM and on Friday, 8 – 11 AM.

James Thomas Greenway Jr. 91, of Henrietta, Texas passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025.
The family will be receiving friends between 6 and 8 p.m. on Monday, September 29, 2025 at Davis Owens and Brumley Funeral Home in Henrietta, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at the funeral home with Mr. Randy Greenway, officiating. Interment will follow at Hope Cemetery in Henrietta under the direction of Davis Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Henrietta.
James was born on October 31, 1933 to the late James Thomas Sr. and Dena Mae (Brumley) Greenway in Frederick, Oklahoma. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Cooper and the couple married on August 9, 1952 in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Later, in 1959 the couple moved to Henrietta, Texas in Clay County. They spent many wonderful years together before Dorothy’s passing 2015. James was a hardworking man and did about everything. He worked as an electrical lineman, mechanic, night watchman, truck driver and even found time to serve the community on the Henrietta Volunteer Fire Dept. James was known and loved by everyone. He enjoyed going fishing being a Clay County weather watcher and using his ham radio. James loved his family and telling them his history stories. This amazing man will truly be missed by his family and friends.
Along with his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Greenway; and seven siblings.
He is survived by his four daughters, Debra Greenway, Deanna Thoma and husband, Ron, Jamie Bowers and husband, Richard and Pam McVoy and husband, Jim; daughter-in-law, Georgianna Greenway; nine grandchildren, Erik Chandler and wife, Autumn, Katrina Whightman and husband, Malcolm, Heather Freeman and husband, Kevin, James Richard Duke Jr., Justin Andrew Bowers and Ashley, Dustin Adam Bowers and wife, Laura, Brad Greenway, Rica Mitchell and husband, Josh, Kim Box and husband, Brandon, Racheal McVoy and Nathaniel James and Mackinze; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Michael Wayne Brunker, Sr., known to all as Mike, was born on April 27, 1949, and passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025.
A visitation will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2201 Airline Dr., Bossier City, Louisiana, with Thomas Gatti officiating. Mike was a longtime resident of the Shreveport–Bossier area.
Mike was born to Venola “Babs” Passaro and Sam Passaro. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who lived life with hard work, humor, and heart. Known throughout the auto world as “Make It Fit Mike,” he earned respect for his skill, determination, and ability to always find a way to get the job done. Mike began working at the young age of 14, carrying that strong work ethic throughout his life. He loved his motorcycle and the freedom of the open road. Mike never met a stranger and greeted everyone with a joyful “Merry Christmas” and a hearty “Ho Ho Ho.” Above all, he had a strong faith in God, which guided his life and the way he treated others.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Venola “Babs” Passaro; his biological father, Quentin Brunker; his father, Sam Passaro; his sister, Margaret Passaro; and his brother, Roger Passaro.
He is survived by his loving wife, Robin Brunker; his children, Mikee, Tanya, Tammy, Michael Jr., and Toni; his cherished grandchildren, Cody, Brandon, Breelyn, Kelsey, Brynlee, Little Mikee, Axle, Michelle, Harlee, Lauren, Blaine, and Kyle; his sister, Robin Passaro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mike’s legacy of love, laughter, faith, and hard work will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Robert Glenn Jones W5BJ
February 6, 1936 — June 6, 2025
On Friday, June 6, 2025, Robert Glenn “Bob” Jones passed away peacefully at the age of 89 in Dallas, TX. Bob also began his life in Dallas, born to Robert D. Jones and Velda Hanby Jones on February 6, 1936.
He was raised in Mesquite, TX until the age of 15 when he moved with his family to Houston. After graduating from Lamar High School in 1954, he became a student at Texas A&M University and a proud member of the “Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band”, serving in the Corps of Cadets and the Marching Band.
Bob was a member of Texas A & M Class of 1958 and graduated with a B.S. in Math and Physics. He married Carol Joan Townley of Houston, TX on December 30, 1958. Together they started his time with the U.S. Army where he served a little over two years and was discharged from the Army Reserves as a Captain three years later.
After the service, they moved to Garland, TX where Bob began his career as an engineer at Collins Radio. He navigated through acquisitions by Rockwell International and Alcatel and ultimately retired after a dedicated 30-year career. Bob and Carol enjoyed 66 years of marriage and were the proud parents of three children: Robert Glenn, Cherilyn Lee and Wendell David.
In addition to caring for his family, Bob found the greatest joy in serving the community. He became an amateur radio operator at 15, originally licensed as W5TGA and later opting to change to W5BJ. He was a member of the Garland Amateur Radio Club since 1962 and participated in emergency communications (RACES and ARES), and Garland Civil Emergency Service’s SKYWARN program, providing key communication during active weather situations and running annual training events. He volunteered alongside other radio operators for over 30 years at the White Rock/Dallas marathon and enjoyed Field Day and many other amateur radio events. Bob also served on the Garland Planning and Zoning Commission and for seven years on the Sachse City Council.
In his younger years Bob enjoyed playing sports, then evolved to coaching Glenn and Cheril’s football and softball teams and eventually resigned himself to watching them on TV, staying true over the years to the Cowboys, Rangers and his beloved Aggies. In his later years he loved listening to music in the evenings, dinners with family or friends and time with his grandkids. He played the harmonica around the house, at nursing homes, FUMC Sachse (his church home for 40 years) and even accompanied a famous musician a time or two. He and Carol traveled around the country taking trips with his parents, kids and Carol’s mother, Opal.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, son Glenn Jones and his wife Karen, daughter Cheril Giles, and son Wendell Jones and his wife Kimberly, seven grandchildren (Amanda Jones Stearns, Shelly Rinebarger Kelley, Alex Jones, Megan Rinebarger, Aja Dyer, Caden and Logan Jones) and six great grandchildren.
Bob lived a long life and a good life. He will be missed.
RUDY JOSEPH DUCHAN WA5QNH
November 3, 1939 – May 23, 2025
Rudy Joseph Duchan, age 85, a native of Houston, Texas and resident of Patterson, Louisiana transitioned peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2025 at St. Joseph Hospice in River Ridge, Louisiana.
Rudy served in the United States of America Navy & Aiir Force and was a decorated veteran. He worked in the oil industry for 21 years and at Wal Mart where he retired after 29 years of service.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter, Teresita Broussard of Lafayette, Louisiana; three stepdaughters, Ina (Alvin, Sr.) Irvin of Patterson, Louisiana Jo-Lynn (Jonathan) Dardar and Tina (Kevin Hamilton) Young, both of Houston, Texas; stepsons, Joseph C. Young, III of Patterson, Louisiana, Willie (Winnie) Louis Jeff, Sr. of Houma, Louisiana, and Mark Jeff of Patterson, Louisiana; his first wife, Geraldine Broussard; his godparents, Frank and Jackie Price; a god sister, Deborah Price; and god brother, Leonard Price; twenty one grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren; along with a host of family and friends.
Rudy was preceded in death by his father, Ulysses Duchan; his mother, Rosetta Verrett; wife, Betty Young Duchan; his second wife, Rose Dell Duchan; his stepdaughter, Rosa Lee Jeff; and his stepson, Terry Clay.

John Randy Lavender Jr died on January 26th, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Stoneham Massachusetts on October 30th, 1950. He grew up in Melrose Massachusetts and graduated from Melrose High School in 1969. He joined the US Air Force in 1971 where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. He graduated from San Antonio college with an associates degree in 1994.
He was well known in the ham radio community. Family and friends will always miss the sound of Morse code blaring through the house. Randy is survived by his wife Martha and his three children. Priscilla Lavender, John Lavender 3rd, and Angela Lavender as well as his grandchildren, Mark Guevara and Coraline Isley.
The funeral will take place on February 25, 2025, at Fort Sam Cemetery 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd San Antonio TX 78209.

I requested my current call, N5RL, under the then newly established vanity call sign program in 1996. From 1991 until 2007 I was very active in the VE program for both the ARRL and W5YI.
Last worked for Harris Microwave division repairing Microwave radio gear. Was on active duty with the USAF working on and operating ground communications equipment.
As a USAF radio operator, worked ground to air, point to point, and ran phone patches back to the “world” for military personnel stationed at Udorn RTAFB in Northern Thailand during the Vietnam war.
Also hold an FCC GROL (formerly know as a 2nd Class), ARRL ORS certificate, 10-10 member 3767 and “A1 Operators club”.
